The Ashes, the legendary cricket series between England and Australia, began in 1877 with the first-ever Test match played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
The rivalry quickly grew after England lost to Australia on home soil in 1882, prompting a satirical obituary in The Sporting Times declaring that “English cricket had died, and the body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia.”
The 1985 Ashes was a 6-Test series played in England, and it marked a strong return to form for the English side after losing the previous Ashes in 1982/83.
England under David Gower's captaincy dominated the series and won the Ashes 3–1, with two Tests drawn. Australia were led by Allan Border - his team was handicapped as a lot experienced Australian players were banned after a rebel tour to South Africa.
