The Ashes, the legendary cricket series between England and Australia, began in 1877 with the first-ever Test match played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

The rivalry quickly grew after England lost to Australia on home soil in 1882, prompting a satirical obituary in The Sporting Times declaring that “English cricket had died, and the body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia.”

1980 Centenary Test

The 1980 Centenary Test at Lord’s, held from August 28 to September 2, marked 100 years since the first Test match in England between England and Australia. A festive, nostalgia-laden affair, the match featured strong lineups and moments of vintage drama.

Key Performances:

  • Kim Hughes scored a brilliant 117 with 14 fours and 3 sixes
  • Graeme Wood contributed 112
  • England’s first innings was dominated by Australia’s pace attack. Dennis Lillee took 4/43 and Len Pascoe claimed 5/59
  • In Australia’s second innings, Kim Hughes again starred with 84 runs including 11 fours and 2 sixes, while captain Greg Chappell made 59.
  • England’s second innings saw Geoff Boycott score an unbeaten 128 and Mike Gatting remain not out on 51, but time ran out as they reached 244/3.
  • This test marked the end of the long career of commentator John Arlott.
