Left handed batsman delivered with grace

Woolley, Frank E

Born : 27 May 1887 at Tonbridge, Kent, England
Died : 18 October 1978 at Chester, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada

Frank Woolley was a tall, languid left-handed batsman, natural left-arm spinner and superb slip fielder. His batting was a delight to watch. Against Australia at The Oval in 1912, he took 10-49 and scored 62 to help England win a low-scoring encounter.

His best Test series with the bat was against South Africa in 1929 when he scored 378 runs at an average of 126.00. He had a penchant for getting out in the 90s, making no fewer than 35 such scores to go with his 145 first-class centuries. He shared a then world record for the 10th wicket in first-class cricket of 235 with Arthur Fielder for Kent against Worcestershire at Stourbridge in 1909.

He is the 2nd highest run-scorer in all first-class cricket with nearly 59 000 runs. He took over 2 000 wickets and is the only fielder to take 1 000 first-class catches.
