
George Giffen was born in Adelaide. Giffen was a middle order batsman who bowled off breaks delivered at a flatter trajectory and quickish pace. He played his first Test in 1881 when only 22 years old.
Giffen is widely regarded as one of Australia’s greatest ever all-rounder; he was the only Australian to score over 10,000 runs and capture over 1000 wickets in his first-class career.
He appeared in 31 Tests scoring a total of 1238 runs and taking 103 wickets. In first-class matches, Giffen scored 12,501 runs, at an average of 29, and took 1109 wickets, at an average of 21 runs. In matches between Australia and England he made 1238 runs, and took 103 wickets.
