Kumar Sangakkara: Was a brilliant batting record sullied by match fixing?

Sangakkara, Kumar C

Kumar Sangakkara was a wicket keeper who turned into one of the best batsman of his generation after giving up the gloves in the long format. His magical cover drives always seemed to bisect the fielders. He also could hook and pull with ease.

His powers of concentration were on display when he was involved in the highest ever Test partnership - a 624 run stand with his good friend, Mahela Jayawardena against South Africa in 2006.

Sangakkara's career was filled with disappointment after Sri Lanka lost 4 successive World Cup finals in both ODI and T20 formats - 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2012. The 2011 World Cup final loss to India was a particular bitter pill to swallow after Sri Lanka dominated in the first halve only to go down in a whimper. Many match fixing claims have been made on this surprising loss.

His unbeaten half-century to win the ICC World Twenty20 for Sri Lanka in 2014 was probably his crowning glory.

Towards the end of his career, Sangakkara produced 319 and 105 against Bangladesh at Chittagong in 2014 to cement his spot amidst other batting giants.

Despite his batting prowess and leadership skills, there have been many whispers of match fixing allegations (unproven) raised against Sangakkara. These intensified in the latter part of his career after the launch of the IPL in 2008. In this 2008-2015 period, Sangakkara and his partner in crime Mahela Jayawardena dictated the direction of Sri Lankan cricket. This was first evident to the public when Sangakkara was instrumental in getting the 2009 tour of England cancelled due to a scheduling conflict with the lucrative IPL then in its second season.

Ed Hawkins book on match fixing singled out Sri Lanka's Test match against England at Cardiff in 2011 as a prime example of spot fixing in cricket.

His ordering of a no ball to prevent Sehwag scoring a century raised eyebrows in an ODI against India in Dambulla in 2010. He later denied having anything to do with this incident at the post match press conference, only to get caught out when the stump mic audio emerged a few days later. This issue raised many questions on Sangakkara's integrity.
