Geoffrey Merton Griffin (12 June 1939 – 16 November 2006) was a right arm fast bowler.
In his second Test at Lord’s in 1960, he achieved a historic feat by taking a hat-trick—the first by a South African in Test cricket and the first ever at Lord’s.
Griffin’s career, though short-lived, had a significant impact on cricket. His situation brought attention to the issue of illegal bowling actions, prompting stricter enforcement and discussions about fairness in the sport. Despite the controversy, he remained dignified, declining legal action to avoid further tarnishing the game’s reputation.
After retiring from cricket, Griffin continued to contribute to sports, playing hockey for Rhodesia and remaining involved in athletics. He passed away in Durban in 2006 at the age of 67
