Jonty Rhodes: Athleticism and ability to produce spectacular catches

Rhodes, Jonathan N

Jonty Rhodes was born on 27 July 1969 in Pietermaritzburg.

As a right-handed batsman he was noted for his quick running. He was especially noted for his fielding, particularly catching, ground fielding and throwing from his most common position of cover point.

Rhodes first came to prominence in the 1992 World Cup after he effected a spectacular run out, throwing himself horizontally at the stumps to make sure the ball didn't miss the wicket.

Since the 1999 Cricket World Cup, he had effected the ninth highest number of run outs in ODI cricket of any fieldsman, with the third highest success rate.

During his career he also played club cricket for the University of Natal in Pietermaritzburg and first-class cricket for Gloucestershire County Cricket Club, KwaZulu-Natal and Natal. Rhodes retired from Test cricket in 2000, and from one day cricket in 2003 after an injury during the 2003 Cricket World Cup.

Rhodes made his test debut v India at Durban - Nov 13-17, 1992 and his ODI debut v Australia at Sydney - Feb 26, 1992. He was named as a Wisden Cricketer of the Year 1999.

Rhodes also represented South Africa at hockey, and was chosen as part of the 1992 Olympic Games squad to go to Barcelona; however, the squad did not qualify to go to the tournament.

He had to reinvent himself in 1997 after claims that his batting was being affected by his tendency to play hockey type shots. Rhodes was successful in this change and went on to average 50 for the rest of his Test career.
