Dale Steyn is one of the finest fast bowlers of his generation With a fast, long and smooth run-up, an absolute effortless style of delivery, and a pair of furious eyes, Steyn had all the attributes a pace bowler should have. He has one of the best Test records of any fast bowler in the subcontinent.
Steyn's economy rate of 6.45 between overs 41 and 50 in ODIs is the third best among pace bowlers since he made his ODI debut in 2005.
After making his debut against England in 2004, Steyn appeared in 93 Tests. He took 439 wickets, and played his last Test against Sri Lanka in 2019 before announcing his retirement from Test cricket in August that year to focus on limited-overs cricket.
It is no coincidence that Steyn enjoyed his two most successful years as a Test bowler in 2008 (74 Test wickets) and 2010 (60 Test wickets) as the key strike bowler of the South African Test side that reached No.1 in the rankings.
Steyn was named ICC 2008 Test Cricketer of the Year and Wisden’s Leading Cricketer in the World in 2013 and was No 1 bowler in the ICC Test rankings for a record 263 weeks between 2008 and 2014.
Steyn retired from all forms of cricket in August 2021.
