Hophnie Hobah “Hines” Johnson (13 July 1910 – 24 June 1987) was a Jamaican-born West Indian international cricketer renowned for his pace bowling.
Standing 6′3″, he made a sensational Test debut against England in Kingston in March 1948, claiming 5 for 41 and 5 for 55—giving him a ten-wicket haul (10/96), a first for a West Indian fast bowler on debut.
Johnson’s first-class career, spanning 1935 to 1951, was interrupted by World War II. Despite debuting at the relatively late age of 37, he impressed in his three-match Test stint (1948–1950), taking 13 wickets at an average of 18.30 . His standout performance—two five-wicket hauls in his first game—remains a highlight of West Indies cricket history (). Johnson played only against England, wrapping up his Test career at age 40 on the 1950 England tour.
Johnson passed away in Miami in 1987 at the age of 76.
