Philip Verant Simmons was born on 18 April 1963 in Arima, Trinidad. He is a former all-round cricketer who played for the West Indies as an opening batsman, a medium pace bowler and a slip fielder. During the 1988 West Indies tour of England, in the tour match against Gloucestershire, Simmons was struck on the head by a fast ball from David Lawrence in bad light at Bristol. His heart stopped and he required emergency surgery to save his life. He was voted a Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1997. Source: CricketCrowd Reporter.
