Martin Crowe (1962-2016): A tribute with his best cricketing moments

Possibly New Zealand's Finest Batsman

Martin Crowe was born on 22 September 1962. He was a technically correct right hand batsman who made his Test debut against Australia in 1982. He was the top NZ batsman throughout his career until he retired in 1996.

Crowe played 77 Test matches, averaging 45.65 (17 centuries and 18 half-centuries). He also played 143 One Day International, averaging 38.55, and hit four centuries and 34 half-centuries.

He scored NZ's then highest Test score of 299. During this knock, he shared a 467-run partnership with Andrew Jones, at the time the highest partnership in Test history when they secured an unlikely draw against Sri Lanka in 1991.

He captained NZ from 1990-1993 including taking his country to the semi finals of their home World Cup in 1992.

He was a Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1985. He was awarded the MBE in 1991. After retirement, he was an astute TV commentator and author. His brother, Jeff Crowe, also played for and captained New Zealand.

After a prolonged battle with cancer, Martin Crowe died on 3 March 2016. He was aged 53.
