Player profile:
Allen, David A

David Allen was born on 29 Oct 1935 in Bristol. He was an accurate right arm offspinner who had a comfortable run up and easy action. He could bowl accurately over long spells.

After making his first class debut for Gloucetershire in 1953, Allen took over as England's premier offspinner from Jim Laker when he made his test debut against the West Indies in 1960 at Barbados where he went wicketless in the drawn 1st Test of the series. During a 6 year test career, Allen had several rivals for his spot in Illingworth, Titmus and Mortimore. He played 39 Tests and took 122 wickets with 5-30 against Pakistan in Dhaka (1962) as his best. He also made 5 test match fifties during his career.

During the famous Old Trafford test in 1960 that Australia won to regain the Ashes, it is considered that England skipper Peter May blundered by taking off Allen after 20 runs were scored off an over by Alan Davisdon. Allen has previously taken 3 quick wickets.

Allen was elected Club President of Gloucestershire in 2011.
