Ryan Ponsonby Burl is renowned for his explosive left-handed batting and useful right-arm leg-spin. Born on 15 April 1994 in Marondera, Zimbabwe, Burl represented his country at the 2012 and 2014 ICC Under-19 World Cups before progressing into senior cricket.
He made his ODI debut against Afghanistan in February 2017 and his Test debut against South Africa in December of the same year. A versatile all-rounder, he has become an important member of Zimbabwe’s limited-overs teams, combining aggressive stroke play with energetic fielding and occasional match-changing contributions with the ball.
Burl shot to international prominence with some remarkable performances in T20 cricket. In August 2022, against Bangladesh, he famously smashed 34 runs in a single over off left-arm spinner Nasum Ahmed, striking five sixes and a four in a breathtaking display of power hitting.
A month later, he produced another memorable performance against Australia in Townsville, claiming five wickets for just 10 runs in an ODI to help Zimbabwe secure a historic victory. These performances demonstrated his ability to influence matches with both bat and ball against formidable opposition.
An experienced campaigner, Burl has also participated in various overseas franchise competitions, broadening his experience in different conditions and formats. His aggressive middle-order batting, handy leg-spin and competitive temperament make him a valuable asset to Zimbabwe cricket, particularly in the shorter formats.
While consistency has occasionally proved challenging, his capacity for spectacular individual performances and his willingness to take the game to the opposition have earned him a distinctive place in Zimbabwe’s modern cricketing history.
