Capel, David J

David Capel was an English all-rounder who represented England between 1987 and 1990.

Born on February 6, 1963, in Northampton, he was a loyal servant to Northamptonshire and one of their most consistent performers through the 1980s and 1990s.

A right-handed batsman and right-arm medium-fast bowler, Capel played 15 Tests, scoring 374 runs at an average of 15.58, with a top score of 98 against Pakistan in Karachi in 1987–88. With the ball, he took 21 wickets at 50.66, his best figures being 3 for 88.

In 23 One Day Internationals, he made 327 runs at 19.23 and claimed 17 wickets at 58.94. Over a long first-class career from 1981 to 1998, Capel amassed 12,202 runs at 30.68, including 16 centuries, and took 546 wickets at 32.17.

Revered for his commitment and fighting spirit, he later served as a coach for Northamptonshire and worked with the England women’s team. Capel passed away on 2 September 2020 after a long illness caused by a brain tumour.
