Player profile:
Pilling, Richard

Dick Pilling (Richard Pilling; 11 August 1855 – 28 March 1891) was one of the finest wicketkeepers of the early era of cricket and a key figure in the rise of Lancashire County Cricket Club during the late 19th century.

Born in Old Warden, Bedfordshire, he moved to Lancashire as a child and developed into an exceptionally quick and reliable gloveman. He made his Test debut for England cricket team against Australia cricket team in 1881–82 and played eight Test matches through 1888.

Although Pilling’s batting returns were modest—91 runs in eight Tests and 2,572 runs in 250 first-class matches—his wicketkeeping was regarded as outstanding.

In first-class cricket he completed 459 catches and 208 stumpings, remarkable figures for an era when pitches were often rough and unpredictable. His speed standing up to the stumps and clean gathering made him one of the most admired keepers of the Victorian age, and he was a central member of Lancashire’s strong sides alongside players such as A. N. Hornby and Dick Barlow.

Pilling’s career and life were tragically cut short. After receiving a successful benefit season from Lancashire in 1889, he contracted tuberculosis and died in Manchester in March 1891 at just 35 years of age. Later that year he was posthumously named one of the Wisden Cricketers of the Year, recognition of his lasting impact on the game.
