1975: Ewen Chatfield hit by Lever bouncer, almost dies on pitch

In the era before helmets were introduced, Ewen Chatfield was making his test debut, against England.

Chatfield was struck in the left temple by a short-pitched delivery from Englishman Peter Lever, a blow that caused the Kiwi's heart to stop beating.

Only a quick medical intervention by English physiotherapist Thomas saved Chatfield life as he lay motionless on the pitch. Chatfield had suffered a fractured skull.

1st Test, Feb 1975.
