In the decisive 5th Test of the 1926 Ashes series at The Oval, veteran Jack Hobbs and Herbert Sutcliffe delivered a remarkable performance in England’s second innings.
Facing a challenging pitch after heavy rain, the opening pair defied the conditions with a resilient partnership. Hobbs scored 100 runs from 221 balls, while Sutcliffe contributed an impressive 161 runs off 428 balls. Their combined effort of 172 runs laid a solid foundation for England’s total of 436, setting Australia a daunting target of 415 runs.
This partnership was instrumental in England’s eventual 289-run victory, securing the Ashes with a 1–0 series win.
