Foulkes pace knocks over England despite blazing Brook century: 1st ODI (Bay Oval)

Paceman Zakary Foukes bowled with fire as New Zealand defeated England by four wickets in the first ODI at Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui, to take a 1–0 lead in the series.

After winning the toss and choosing to bowl, Foulkes (4-43) ripped through England’s top order, reducing them to 10 for 4. Harry Brook produced a stunning lone effort, smashing 135 off 101 balls with nine fours and eleven sixes to lift England to 223 all out in just 35.2 overs.

In reply, New Zealand also stumbled early at 24 for 3, but Daryl Mitchell anchored the chase with an unbeaten 78 while Michael Bracewell added a steady 51. Their partnership guided the hosts to 224 for 6 in 36.4 overs, sealing victory with more than 13 overs to spare.

Brook’s brilliant century dominated England’s innings, but Mitchell’s composure ensured New Zealand’s successful pursuit and a confident start to the series.

New Zealand 224 for 6 (Mitchell 78*, Bracewell 51, Carse 3-45) beat England 223 (Brook 135, Overton 46, Foulkes 4-41, Duffy 3-66) by four wickets.
