Mitchell century is the difference as NZ edge out Windies: 1st ODI (Christchurch)

Daryl Mitchell stroked a century as New Zealand edged the West Indies by 7 runs in a tight finish in the 1st ODI in Christchurch.

Batting first, New Zealand reached 269/7, built almost entirely around a superb 119 from Mitchell, who battled through a groin injury to hold the innings together, while Devon Conway added a steady 49.

In response, the West Indies chased gamely, with Sherfane Rutherford scoring 55 and several middle-order contributions keeping them in the hunt, but they ultimately finished on 262/6, just short of the target.

Mitchell’s gritty century proved the decisive difference, earning him Player of the Match honours.

New Zealand 269 for 7(Mitchell 119, Conway 49, Seales 3-41, Forde 2-55) beat West Indies 262 for 6 (Rutherford 55, Jamieson 3-52) by seven runs.
