Root masterclass rescues England after Starc burst: 2nd Test, Day 1 (Gabba)

England fought back strongly on Day 1 of the 2nd Ashes Test at The Gabba after an early collapse triggered by Mitchell Starc, who removed Duckett and Pope for ducks.

Zak Crawley (76) and Joe Root steadied the innings with a vital partnership, with Root showcasing superb control and patience against Australia’s pace-heavy attack. Root continued to dominate through the middle session, eventually reaching his first Test century on Australian soil.

Late in the day, Root accelerated and, together with Jofra Archer, added a rapid 61-run stand for the final wicket. Root closed unbeaten on 135, guiding England to a competitive 325/9 at stumps despite Starc’s outstanding 6/71.

The day belonged to Root’s masterclass, but Australia remained in the contest thanks to disciplined fast bowling.

England 325 for 9 (Root 135*, Crawley 76, Starc 6-71) vs Australia.
