Sir Stanley Jackson: Led England to famous Ashes victory

Jackson, Sir Francis Stanley

Sir Stanley Jackson was the son of Lord Allerton. He was a tall, well built right handed batsman and medium pace bowler.

Jackson led Cambridge University to victory over Oxford in the 1893 University match. He made his Test debut for England against Australia in 1893, making 91 and 103 in his first two test appearances.

He went on from strength to strength, until he became one of the finest cricketers ever seen in England. Unfortunately he could not go on any tour to Australia owing to business commitments The presence of Lord Hawke in charge of Yorkshire until 1910 prevented him taking over as the county captain.

Jackson's finest moment was in the 1902 Ashes battle where he was easily the best batsman from either side. He played a famous role in England winning the 3 run match at Old Trafford.

In 1905, he skippered England to an Ashes win with a dominant personal contribution. He headed both the batting averages (70.28) and the bowling averages (15.46).

Jackson played 20 Tests, scoring 1415 runs at 48.79 with 5 centuries. He also took 24 wickets at 33.29.

He retired in 1907 and was elected as an MP. He was also the Governor of Bengal and Chairman of the Conservative Party. He chaired the England selectors in 1934 and 1946.

Jackson died aged 76 on March 9, 1947 at Hyde Park, London.
