England fumbles let Australia off the hook: 2nd Test, Day 2 (Gabba)

Australia took firm control of the 2nd Ashes Test on Day 2 after England were bowled out for 334 early in the morning.

Australia’s top order dominated through the day, with Jake Weatherald (72), Marnus Labuschagne (65) and Steve Smith (61) all making composed half-centuries, pushing the hosts to 378/6 at stumps, a 44-run lead with plenty of batting still to come.

England’s bowlers created chances but their fielders let them down badly, dropping five catches that proved costly as Alex Carey (46*) and Michael Neser (15*) carried Australia safely to the close. With a solid platform and momentum firmly on their side, Australia head into Day 3 in a commanding position.

Australia 378 for 6 (Weatherald 72, Labuschagne 65, Smith 61, Carse 3-113) lead England 334 (Root 138*, Starc 6-75) by 44 runs.
