1st Test preview: Jofra omission criticised as NZ battle evenly matched England

England begin their three-Test home series against New Zealand looking to bounce back after a disappointing Ashes campaign. Nasser Hussain and Michael Atherton preview the series.

Under the leadership of Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum, the hosts have refreshed their squad, blending emerging talent with established stars such as Joe Root and Harry Brook. The series, which gets underway at Lord’s, marks an important early assignment in the 2025-27 ICC World Test Championship cycle and provides England with an opportunity to reassert themselves in home conditions.

New Zealand, meanwhile, arrive as one of the world’s most disciplined and resilient Test teams. Captain Tom Latham leads a side strengthened by the experience of Kane Williamson and the pace of Kyle Jamieson, giving the Black Caps a balanced attack well suited to English pitches. With further Tests scheduled at The Oval and Trent Bridge, the contest promises an intriguing clash between England’s attacking “Bazball” approach and New Zealand’s patient, methodical style.

Simon Doull has criticised Jofra Archer’s omission from England’s Test squad to face New Zealand, calling it "absolutely ludicrous" amid reports that the fast bowler may miss the opening two matches of the series.
