Recalled Boland strikes South Africa before rain: 2nd Test, Day 1 (Port Elizabeth)

Seamer Scott Boland struck twice in quick succession to leave South Africa reeling at 20/2 on a rain-affected opening day of the second Test at St George’s Park, Gqeberha.

After winning the toss and opting to bowl, Australia exploited the overcast conditions and a green-tinged pitch, with Boland dismissing Aiden Markram for 11 before trapping David Bedingham for a golden duck with the very next delivery.

Boland, recalled in place of Lyon, finished with impressive figures of 2/5 from 3.2 overs, putting the hosts under immediate pressure.

Persistent rain and repeated interruptions restricted play to just 12.2 overs before the day was abandoned. Temba Bavuma was unbeaten on four, alongside debutant Marques Ackerman on five, when play was called off.

Australia, who lead the three-Test series 1–0 following their emphatic 214-run victory in Durban, will look to capitalise on Boland’s early breakthroughs when play resumes on Day 2, weather permitting.

South Africa 20 for 2 (Markram 11, Boland 2-5) vs Australia.
