Skipper Temba Bavuma stroked his 5th Test century as South Africa seized control of the second Test against Australia on Day 3 at St George’s Park, Gqeberha, declaring their first innings at 425/9 to establish a commanding 422-run lead.

Bavuma produced a magnificent 179, anchoring the innings with a patient and authoritative display, while Marco Jansen contributed 85 and Simon Harmer added a valuable 82. Their substantial partnerships transformed South Africa’s position after they had struggled at 97/5 on Day 2.

Australia’s second innings began disastrously when Nic Maddinson was dismissed for a duck, leaving the visitors at 3/1 at stumps. Travis Head was unbeaten on one, with nightwatchman Scott Boland on two.

Trailing by 422 runs, Australia face an enormous task to avoid defeat, while South Africa will look to press home their advantage over the remaining two days.

Australia 3 for 1 trail South Africa 425 for 9 dec (Bavuma 179, Jansen 85, Harmer 82, Boland 5-81, Starc 3-89) by 422 runs.
