Rathnayake trumps Brook as SL run down England’s 430 in thriller: Pak Tri Nations SLR v ...

Harry Brook’s stunning double century was in vain as Sri Lanka produced a sensational run chase to defeat England by two wickets in a record-breaking ODI encounter, reaching 430 for eight after being set a target of 430.

Pavan Rathnayake led the charge with a magnificent 130, while Avishka Fernando contributed 97 and Dasun Shanaka smashed 97 to keep Sri Lanka in contention.

England had earlier piled up an imposing 429 for four, powered by Harry Brook’s outstanding 202, Joe Root’s 69, Will Jacks’ unbeaten 66 and Tom Banton’s 50.

Brook broke Shubman Gill’s for the fastest double century (117 balls) as he reached 50 off 42 balls, then 100 off 75, 150 off 97 and 200 off 114 balls.

Josh Tongue was England’s leading wicket-taker with three for 79. With the match finely poised in the closing stages, Janith Liyanage anchored Sri Lanka’s finish with an unbeaten 61, guiding the visitors home at 430 for eight with just one ball remaining.

The extraordinary contest featured huge individual scores, relentless boundary-hitting and dramatic momentum swings, as Sri Lanka completed a remarkable chase against one of England’s biggest ODI totals.

Rathnayake’s century and the contributions of Fernando, Shanaka and Liyanage proved decisive in one of the most memorable run chases in ODI cricket.

Sri Lanka 430 for 8 (Rathnayake 130, Avishka Fernando 97, Shanaka 97, Liyanage 61*, Tongue 3-79) beat England 429 for 4 (Brook 202, Root 69, Jacks 66*, Banton 50) by two wickets.
