The opening ODI between West Indies and India was played at Queen’s Park Oval, Port of Spain, on April 26, 1997.
India, batting first, struggled against a disciplined West Indian bowling attack after making a promising start. Sachin Tendulkar top-scored with 44, striking ten boundaries, while Nayan Mongia contributed 29.
Curtly Ambrose was particularly impressive, claiming four wickets, with Franklyn Rose taking three as India were dismissed for 179 in 48.3 overs.
West Indies began their reply positively but lost Stuart Williams early. Shivnarine Chanderpaul then took charge with a superb innings of 83 from 88 balls, striking 12 boundaries and demonstrating excellent control against the Indian attack.
Brian Lara provided support with an unbeaten 25, while Carl Hooper remained not out on nine. Chanderpaul’s assured batting ensured that the home side remained comfortably ahead of the required rate despite the loss of two wickets.
Rain interruptions resulted in a revised target of 147 from 33 overs under the Duckworth-Lewis method. West Indies reached 149 for 2 in 27.5 overs, securing a convincing eight-wicket victory with 31 balls remaining.
Chanderpaul was named Player of the Match for his match-winning contribution, giving West Indies a 1–0 lead in the four-match ODI series.
