Inspired by Geoff Lawson's 34 wickets and a big century on debut from South Africanborn Kepler Wessels Australia won back the Ashes after five years in English hands. Greg Chappell took over from Kim Hughes as captain while the England team was weakened by the enforced omission of their South African tour rebels particularly Graham Gooch and John Emburey.
