VVS Laxman hit 143 and Dhoni made 132 to put 259 for the 7th wicket as India piled on a record 6436 declared in their first innings shortly before stumps to lead South Africa by 347 runs.
The tourists were 0-6 in their second knock when play was called off due to bad light.
