Spinner Nathan Lyon (3-48) took 2 late wickets to put South Africa under pressure on 194-6 at stumps, holding a narrow 70-run lead.

Starc had removed opener Dean Elgar and first-innings centurion Faf du Plessis to leave the tourists in trouble.

Earlier, Starc struck 53 as Australia carried their score to 383 giving them a 124 run lead.
