Smith and rain hobble England: 4th Test, Day 1 (Manchester)

Steve Smith defied England's attack on his return after his concussion to the Australia side on a rain-shortened first day.

Smith posted a record-extending eighth successive Ashes half-century to end the day 60 not out and take the tourists to 170-3.

Smith to added 116 with Marnus Labuschagne (67) to repair early damage when Australia were 28-2.

Australia 170 for 3 (Labuschagne 67, Smith 60*, Broad 2-35) v England.
