Maxwell powers record chase over SL: 1st ODI (Pallekele)

Allrounder Glenn Maxwell was the star as Australia completed their greatest chase against Sri Lanka to win the series opener.

Maxwell hit an unbeaten 80 to seal a rain-affected two-wicket win with nine balls to spare.

An injured Wanindu Hasaranga took 4-58 while battling a serious leg injury to keep Australia under control until Maxwell cut loose after the rain break.

Earlier, Kusal Mendis posted 86 from 87, helping steady the ship after Sri Lanka went from 0-115 to 3-134. Hasaranga hit 37 from 19 balls as Sri Lanka ended on 300-7.

Australia 282 for 8 (Maxwell 80*, Smith 53, Hasaranga 4-58) beat Sri Lanka 300 for 7 (Mendis 86*, Nissanka 56, Gunathilaka 55) by two wickets (D/L method).
