Root ton edges England ahead: 1st Test, Day 1 (Edgbaston)

Joe Root’s 30th Test century was the highlight as England declared at 393-8 after 78 frenetic overs in the Ashes opener.

Opener Zak Crawley and wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow both scored fifties and provided support for Root. Off spinner Nathan Lyon picked up four wickets.

In reply, Australian openers David Warner and Usman Khawaja survived a tense four-over period of play to draw stumps at 14-0.

England - 393/8 in 78.0 overs (JE Root 118, OE Robinson 17), Australia - 14/0 in 4.0 overs (DA Warner 8, UT Khawaja 4)
