The Ashes, the legendary cricket series between England and Australia, began in 1877 with the first-ever Test match played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

The rivalry quickly grew after England lost to Australia on home soil in 1882, prompting a satirical obituary in The Sporting Times declaring that “English cricket had died, and the body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia.”

1977 Ashes Centenary

This landmark match, held from March 12 to 17, 1977, commemorated 100 years of Test cricket between the two nations.

Remarkably, Australia won by 45 runs—the same margin as in the inaugural Test in 1877, making it a fitting tribute to the game’s history.

Key Performances

  • Rod Marsh (Australia): Played a pivotal role in Australia’s second innings, scoring a resilient 110* off 173 balls.
  • Derek Randall (England): Notably, Randall scored 174 runs in England’s second innings, earning him the title of “Player of the Match.”
  • Dennis Lillee (Australia): Dominated with the ball, taking 11 wickets in the match, showcasing his exceptional pace and skill.
