The Ashes, the legendary cricket series between England and Australia, began in 1877 with the first-ever Test match played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
The rivalry quickly grew after England lost to Australia on home soil in 1882, prompting a satirical obituary in The Sporting Times declaring that “English cricket had died, and the body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia.”
The 1972 Ashes series between Australia and England was a five-match Test series held in England from June to August 1972. The series ended in a 2–2 draw, allowing England to retain the Ashes. This was the last drawn Ashes series until 2019.
The series featured several memorable performances, with Australia’s Greg Chappell and Keith Stackpole consistently scoring crucial runs, while Doug Walters provided valuable support in the middle order. Ian Chappell moulded the Australians into an effective fighting unit.
For England, John Edrich and Tony Greig were the standout batsmen, and captain Ray Illingworth led both tactically and with key contributions with the ball. The matches were marked by competitive cricket, with thrilling contests at Lord’s, Headingley, Old Trafford, and The Oval.
