The Ashes, the legendary cricket series between England and Australia, began in 1877 with the first-ever Test match played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

The rivalry quickly grew after England lost to Australia on home soil in 1882, prompting a satirical obituary in The Sporting Times declaring that “English cricket had died, and the body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia.”

1936/37 Ashes

Gubby Allen led England on their tour to Australia in 1936/37. He had a job to repair the damage done when the previous Bodyline series in 1932/33 almost severed diplomatic relations between England and Australia.

The series marked Don Bradman’s first series as Australian captain, having taken over from Bill Woodfull. The dramatic turnaround from 0-2 to 3-2 remains unique in Test cricket - no other team has successfully won a five-match series after losing the first two Tests.
