1981/82 IND v ENG Tests

After the heady "Botham's Ashes" win, England's selectors brought back a number of veterans, including Keith Fletcher as captain to replace the retired Mike Brearley. Sunil Gavaskar led India to a 1-0 win, with 5 sleepy draws on flat tracks.

The player of the series was Kapil Dev with the Key Performers being:

  • Kapil Dev (India): 318 runs & 22 wickets
  • Sunil Gavaskar (India): 500+ runs including a century at Eden Gardens
  • Sandeep Patil (India): Stylish 174 in Madras Test
  • Bob Willis (England): Led bowling attack, effective in early Tests
  • Graham Gooch & Chris Tavare (England): Top-order resilience

By the time of the 4th Test, Geoff Boycott had been worn down by tiredness, the food and ongoing reports that he was about to be fired as Yorkshire's captain. He also had a run in with skipper Fletcher. Boycott broke Sobers record for the most runs in Test cricket and immediate left the tour in controversial circumstances, ending his career.
