The Ashes, the legendary cricket series between England and Australia, began in 1877 with the first-ever Test match played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

The rivalry quickly grew after England lost to Australia on home soil in 1882, prompting a satirical obituary in The Sporting Times declaring that “English cricket had died, and the body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia.”

2025/26 Ashes

The 2025–26 Ashes series between Australia and England promises a fiery renewal of cricket’s oldest rivalry, with five Tests scheduled from 21 November to 8 January 2025.

Ben Stokes leads England with coach Brendon McCullum guiding a bold and attacking “Bazball” style. Pat Cummins leads Australia fresh after a 3-0 whitewash of the Windies. The key matchups are:

  1. England’s pace attack vs Australian bounce: England must adjust quickly to Perth’s pace before Brisbane’s pink-ball stage—with Ben Stokes leading a younger bowling group.
  2. Spin dynamics: Without Anderson and Broad, England’s spin resources—including Dawson—will be crucial against Australia’s experienced line-up.
  3. Bazball vs counter-attacking cricket: Expect aggressive tactical clashes—England’s high-scoring approach vs Australia’s slick fielding and disciplined bowling.
  4. Mental edge: England must break a decade-plus losing streak in Australia.

The 5 Tests series will be played at:

  • First Test: Perth Stadium (Optus Stadium), Perth, 21–25 November 2025
  • Second (Day/Night Test): The Gabba, Brisbane, 4–8 December 2025
  • Third Test: Adelaide Oval, Adelaide, 17–21 December 2025
  • Fourth (Boxing Day): MCG, Melbourne, 26–30 December 2025
  • Fifth (New Year’s Test): SCG, Sydney, 4–8 January 2026
