Lala Amarnath: First Indian skipper after independence 

Amarnath, Lala

Lala Amarnath was born on 11 Sept 1911 in Kapurthala, Punjab and raised in Lahore.

He was an allrounder who made his Test debut in 1933 against England in Mumbai. He scored a century (118) on debut in the second innings which also was the first century by any Indian in Test cricket.

Amarnath played 24 Test matches, scoring 878 runs (average 24.38) and capturing 45 wickets. He was India’s first captain after partition in 1947 and led them in 15 Tests.

In a first-class career spanning from 1929 to 1964, he made 10,323 runs (average 41.62), including 31 centuries, and took 457 wickets.

Amarnath’s three sons were also successful cricketers, with two, Surinder and Mohinder going onto play Test cricket.

He received the Padma Bhushan honour from the Indian Government in 1991 and was made an Honourary MCC Member in 1960. He died on 5 August 2000 in Delhi.
