Prasanna Jayawardene was a wicket-keeper-batsman who represented his country in Tests and ODIs during the 2000s.
Born in Colombo in 1979, he built a reputation as a technically sound gloveman and a gritty lower-order batter.
Although his international career was relatively brief compared to contemporaries, Jayawardene was respected for his sharp reflexes behind the stumps, particularly to spin, and his ability to play valuable rearguard innings under pressure. He featured mainly in Test cricket, where his resilience and neat keeping made him a reliable presence for Sri Lanka during a transitional period.
Jayawardene played 58 Tests and 9 One-Day Internationals for Sri Lanka between 2000 and 2015. In Tests he scored 2,534 runs at an average a little over 29, registering 4 centuries and 11 fifties, often coming in difficult situations lower down the order. As a wicket-keeper he was sharp and dependable, effecting more than 150 catches and 32 stumpings in the longest format.
