Andy Ganteaume: One Test wonder had better average than Bradman

Ganteaume, Andrew G

Andrew Gordon Ganteaume was born on 22 January 1921 at Belmont, Trinidad and Tobago.

He was a right-handed batsman and a reserve wicket-keeper who made his first class debut in 1940 for Trinidad.

Ganteume was a stylish and small made opening batsman who made his only Test appearance against England at his home ground in the 2nd Test in Trinidad in 1947. He made a dogged 112 and shared in an opening stand of 173 with George Carew. The West Indies drew this Test match.

Such was the riches in West Indian batting at the time with Walcott, Weekes, Worrell etc, that he was then dropped for the rest of the series and never made another appearance in Tests.

Ganteume's Test batting average of 112 is the highest of all time, ahead of even Bradman's 99.94.

He played 50 first class matches scoring 2785 runs at an average of 34.81 (5 centuries).

Ganteume died on 17 February 2016 (aged 95).
