Player profile:
Mattis, Everton Hugh

Everton Hugh Mattis (born 11 April 1957, Kingston, Jamaica) was a right-handed middle-order batsman and occasional right-arm off-break bowler whose entire international career was compressed into a single, fleeting season. Selected to face England in 1980–81, he endured a duck on debut but grew into the four-Test series with increasing assurance.

In Test cricket, Mattis compiled 145 runs from five innings at an average of 29.00, including a highest score of 71. His method was patient rather than expansive, reflected in 401 balls faced at a strike rate of 36.16. In the field he held three catches, and although he bowled only sparingly—36 deliveries across two innings—he maintained a tidy economy rate of 2.33 without taking a wicket.

His One Day International record was, statistically, was more impressive. Mattis scored 86 runs from two innings at an average of 43.00, highlighted by a composed 62 on debut against England at Kingstown, St Vincent. That innings came in a remarkable low-scoring match in which West Indies, defending just 127, secured a dramatic two-run victory, propelled by Collin Croft’s devastating 6 for 15.

Mattis made his Test debut on 13 February 1981 in Port of Spain and played his final Test on 10 April 1981, bringing an international career of less than two months to a close. His trajectory was halted soon after when he joined the rebel West Indies tours of South Africa in 1982–83 and 1983–84, resulting in a life ban from official international cricket. He later relocated to the United States.

A player of evident promise—particularly in limited-overs cricket—Mattis remains one of several West Indian cricketers whose international careers were curtailed by the consequences of the rebel tours.
