Chris Woakes was born in Birmingham on 2 March 1989. He is a tall right hand batsman and right arm fast bowler. Woakes made his first class debut for Warwickshire against West Indies A in Aug 2006.
He was selected for the Australian tour in 2011 and made his T20 debut in Adelaide on 12 Jan 2011 guiding England to a last ball win.
Woakes made his Test debut in the Ashes at the Oval in 2013.
His 2019 World Cup heroics, including key new-ball breakthroughs and a nerveless semi-final performance, remain defining moments of England’s golden era. In Tests, he became England’s “Mr. Reliable” at home, producing memorable spells at Lord’s and The Oval while contributing several match-saving half-centuries.
In September 2025, Chris Woakes announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing to a close a distinguished 15-year career for England. The decision followed a shoulder dislocation sustained during the 2025 Test series against India, and the fact that his central contract was not renewed by the England and Wales Cricket Board.
At the time of his retirement, Woakes had played 62 Tests, claiming 192 wickets, and had also taken 204 wickets across 155 white-ball matches (ODIs + T20Is).
