Dean Headley (born 27 January 1970, Stourbridge, England) is a former England fast-medium bowler who represented the national side in the late 1990s. A right-arm seamer and right-handed lower-order batter, he came from a celebrated cricketing lineage — son of Ron Headley and grandson of West Indies legend George Headley — becoming the first cricketer to have both father and grandfather play Test cricket. Headley made his England debut in ODIs in 1996 and broke into the Test side during the 1997 Ashes.
In Test cricket, Headley played 15 matches, taking 60 wickets at an average of 27.85, with a best of 6/60. He was particularly effective against Australia, famously earning Man of the Match in the 4th Test of the 1998–99 Ashes at Melbourne, where his six-wicket haul powered England to a rare overseas win. With the bat, he scored 186 Test runs at an average of 8.45, reflecting his primary role as a strike bowler rather than an all-rounder.
Headley also appeared in 13 One-Day Internationals, claiming 11 wickets at an average of 47.27. Domestically, he enjoyed a strong county career with Middlesex and Kent, taking 450+ first-class wickets, including multiple five-wicket hauls, and equalling a record by taking three hat-tricks in a single English season (1996). Injuries curtailed his international career, but he remained involved in the game through coaching, administration, and later as an ECB match referee.
