The Ashes, the legendary cricket series between England and Australia, began in 1877 with the first-ever Test match played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

The rivalry quickly grew after England lost to Australia on home soil in 1882, prompting a satirical obituary in The Sporting Times declaring that “English cricket had died, and the body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia.”

1964 Ashes

The 1964 Ashes was a five-Test series in England from 11 June – 20 August 1964. Australia, led by Bob Simpson, drew the series 1–1 and retained the Ashes. Tes Dexter led England.

Series Highlights

  • Bob Simpson’s Marathon 311: At Headingley (3rd Test), Australian captain Bob Simpson scored his maiden Test century, turning it into a monumental 311 – an innings lasting 743 minutes (over 12 hours), still among the longest in Test history.
  • England’s Oval Comeback: Off-spinner Fred Titmus claimed 7 wickets in the match, triggering Australia’s second-innings collapse and setting up England’s 7-wicket victory to square the series.
  • Ken Barrington’s Consistency: England’s batting rock, scoring 582 runs, including a magnificent 256 at Old Trafford, anchoring England’s huge 611/5 dec.
  • Bill Lawry’s Reliability: Australia’s opener made 592 runs, including key innings in every match, providing steady starts.
  • Fast Bowling Rivalry: England’s Fred Trueman led the attack with 29 wickets, showcasing skill and hostility even on batting-friendly surfaces.
  • High-Scoring Draws: Three Tests (Trent Bridge, Lord’s, Old Trafford) produced massive totals and tame draws, highlighting the slow pitches of the era.
  • Changing of the Guard: This was Australia’s first Ashes series without Richie Benaud as captain, marking the start of the Simpson–Lawry leadership era.
