Everton Weekes: Member of 3Ws scored record consecutive Test tons

Weekes, Everton DeCourcy Sir

Born : 26 February 1925 at Pickwick Gap, Westbury, St Michael, Barbados

Short and stocky, Everton Weekes was a wonderful stroke-player all around the wicket. He, together with Clyde Walcott and Frank Worrell, formed the famous 3Ws that was the powerhouse of Windies batting in the 1950s.

After having been troubled by England's bowlers at the start of his career in the 1947/48 series, he had a highest score of just 36 in five innings. Weekes escaped being dropped after an injury to George Headley meant he was included in the final Test at Kingston. He made the most of that opportunity, scoring 141 to help the West Indies win the Test and the series 2-0.

Weekes scored heavily after this reprieve. He was the first man to score centuries in five consecutive Tests, which he did against England and India between 1948 and 1949. He scored 90 (run out) in his next innings.

On that 1948/49 tour of India he scored 779 runs at an average of 111.28. He achieved the rare feat of scoring five double-centuries in one season on the tour of England in 1950.

He was a very popular player in the Lancashire League in the 1950s. He was also an excellent fielder anywhere and was knighted in 1995. He played bridge for Barbados. His son David Murray kept wicket in Tests for West Indies.

Weekes was inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame in 2009.
