Eden Park hosted the first ever T20 international when NZ took on Australia.
Australia won the toss and elected to bat in the carnival atmosphere that prevailed. Ponting’s aggressive innings set the tone and won him the man of the match award.
Glenn McGrath batted with a wig and fake moustache for fun — highlighting the match’s novelty tone. McGrath became the first player in international cricket to receive a red card after he bowled an underarm delivery to Kyle Mills.
The NZ team were kitted out in the 1980s outfit.
Australia 214/5 in 20 overs (Ricky Ponting 98*; Kyle Mills 3/44) beat New Zealand 170/10 in 20 overs (Scott Styris 66; Michael Kasprowicz 4/29) by 44 runs.
