England stun India after Duckett leads record chase: 1st Test, Day 5 (Leeds)

Opener Ben Duckett’s magnificent 149 laid the foundation for a record-breaking England win as they defeated India by five wickets in dramatic fashion at Headingley.

Duckett shared a 188 run partnership for the first wicket with Zak Crawley (65) that set the scene for England’s famous win.

Joe Root calmed the nerves with 53 not out and Jamie Smith (44 not out) hit the winning runs with a six off spinner Ravindra Jadeja.

Duckett’s innings will follow Ian Botham in 1981 and Ben Stokes in 2019 into Headingley folklore as an epic innings to change the course of a Test match.

England took a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.

England became the first team to concede five individual hundreds in any first-class game and still win.

England 465 (Pope 106, Brook 99, Duckett 62, Bumrah 5-83) and 373 for 5 (Duckett 149, Crawley 65, Root 53*, Thakur 2-51) beat India 471 (Gill 147, Pant 134, Jaiswal 101, Tongue 4-86) and 364 (Rahul 137, Pant 118, Tongue 3-72, Carse 3-80) by five wickets.
