Jasprit Bumrah bowled with pace and bounce as India dominated Day 1 of the 1st Test against South Africa at Eden Gardens after bowling the visitors out for 159.
South Africa began positively with a 57-run opening stand, but once Bumrah found rhythm, the innings unraveled quickly.
Bumrah produced a sensational spell to claim 5 for 27, triggering a collapse that saw the Proteas lose all 10 wickets for just 102 runs after their strong start.
Mohammed Siraj and Kuldeep Yadav added two wickets each, ensuring constant pressure throughout the day. Aiden Markram’s 31 was the highest score for South Africa, who struggled to build partnerships once the Indian attack tightened the screws.
By stumps, India held a clear advantage, setting themselves up for a strong first-innings reply on Day
India have now taken a commanding position on day one. By reducing South Africa to a sub-200 total, they’ve gained the first-innings advantage, which in Test cricket often can decide the match. South Africa, on the other hand, will be under pressure to respond strongly with the bat in their second innings and ensure they remain competitive.
India 37 for 1 (Rahul 13*, Jansen 1-11) trail South Africa 159 (Markram 31, Bumrah 5-27, Kuldeep 2-36, Siraj 2-47) by 122 runs.
