Carty, Joseph inspire commanding win for Windies over NZ: 1st ODI (Guyana)

The West Indies kicked off their five-match ODI series in style, chasing down 268 with seven balls to spare to secure a confident seven-wicket victory over New Zealand in Providence, Guyana.

After bowling the visitors out for 267 in 49.5 overs, the hosts anchored their chase around a superb 131-run partnership between Keacy Carty and captain Shai Hope for the second wicket.

Carty fell just short of a well-deserved century with a classy 95, while Hope remained unbeaten on 87 to guide the West Indies to 268 for 3 in 48.5 overs, securing a 1-0 series lead.

Earlier in the day, New Zealand built a steady foundation courtesy of Daryl Mitchell (65) and Will Young (49). However, they failed to find late-innings acceleration as the West Indies bowling attack struck regularly at the death.

Fast bowler Alzarri Joseph led the way with an impressive 4 for 41, while left-arm wrist-spinner Vitel Lawes chipped in with 3 for 54 to keep the tourists to a chaseable total.

West Indies 268 for 3 (Carty 95, Hope 87*) beat New Zealand 267 (Mitchell 65, Young 49, A Joseph 4-41, Lawes 3-54) by seven wickets.
